Coronavirus Fines should be Waived in Victoria

Millions of dollars of fines have been issued during lockdown in Victoria. These fines should be waived.

  • Too much. Currently in Melbourne you could be fined more for visiting your family than for being caught speeding while using your phone and high on meth. That seems a bit much. Three penalty units ($496) seems a sufficient deterrent for first time offenders.
  • We all make mistakes. Sure you shouldn’t have had that dinner party but the government should have encouraged masks. Who caused more harm?

Existing fines should be waived, the penalty changed to $496 and a hotline established for questions about the rules. If we are indeed “all in this together” how about giving the populace a break?
